If you are in the creative field, or looking for an impressive presentation, Wix is the site builder for you. Wix is primarily focused on delivering attractive and customizable site designs. Two of the key differentiations between Wix and other website builders is that they have tons of gorgeous templates and an App Market.
Summary of Pros
-
Extensive collection of professional looking templates
Wix's collection of templates is probably the best among its competitors – the collection is extensive and contains a huge selection of templates for every imaginable business. Wix's templates are modern, mobile-optimized, user-friendly and look professional. Wix also offers a empty template (blank canvas) that you can create your own custom design. -
Well-stocked App Market
Wix's diverse and well-stocked App Market is unparalleled among its competitors. There are free and paid apps developed either by Wix or third-party providers, including Adwords, iTunes, Etsy, PayPal and major social networks. You will easily find apps for any function you need, such as newsletter and email marketing, live chat, testimonials, contests, reservation/appointment scheduling tools, pricing tables, photo gallery, forum, contact forms, coupons, Google Maps and more. -
Image gallery options
Wix offers a ton of photo gallery options – grid, masonry, slideshow, accordion, freestyle, just to name a few. In addition to uploading your own images, Wix lets you add images directly from Facebook, Flickr, Instagram and Picasa accounts. You also have access to their free stock library or purchase images from their Bigstock collection. -
Powerful image editor
Wix comes with Aviary Image Editing that offers controls such as brightness, contrast, saturation and filters for tweaking your images. It also lets you reduce red eyes on photos, cover up blemish or anything that needs to be covered up. You can even add text and stickers to your images using the image editor.
Summary of Cons
-
Site Editor
Wix's site builder is not the most minimalist – it can look over-whelming at first because it gives you a ton of different functions and tools, each with their own set of options and settings available to configure. Furthermore, literally anywhere you click brings up the help menu. While this is helpful on complex tools that need the extra information, it can get frustrating and annoying fast. -
Cannot switch templates
You cannot change your template once you have made your initial choice. According to Wix's website, you can only edit one template at a time and if you want to use a different template, you will need to create a new site with a new template and then transfer your existing plan to your new site. In other words, once you have decided on a template, there's no way to go back and choose another one, though you can customize it until it matches your ideal template. -
No in-site statistics tools
Wix does not offer any in-site statistics tools. If you want to track your website traffic, you will have to set up a Google Analytics account. You can only do this on a paid account and a custom domain. The other option is to install the Web-Stats app from their App Market. Web-Stats is a third-party application and tracks your website information similar to Google Analytics. -
Hashbang symbols in page URLs
Wix inserts hashbang symbols (#!) in your page URLs. For example, instead of www.yourdomain.com/about, your About page URL will be www.yourdomain.com/#!About|pageID. Wix explains that the hashbang symbols in the URL are part of the AJAX technology (ie. animations on page transitions and optimization for mobile devies) and deep linking mechanism that they use, and it cannot be removed or altered. Wix recommends using Google URL Shortener if you feel that your page URL is too long. However, in doing so, your page URL will now become something like http://goo.gl/GFWOdZ.
