Website Builder Review

Webs.com

Webs has been around as an easy-to-use website builder since 2001, longer than competitors like Weebly and Wix. Webs targets mainly small business owners as most of their design templates and tools/apps are business-oriented.

Summary of Pros

  1. User-friendly website builder
Its simple interface makes Webs very intuitive for any user to build a website. It is very easy to add and edit modules using the drag-and-drop builder.
  2. Membership function
Webs comes with a membership function that is integrate into your website. You can add and manage members, send out group emails and set members-only pages.
  3. App Store
Webs has an App Store that lets you add more functions and tools into your website. Tools include blog, photo gallery, calendar, forms and forum. The selection of tools is not extensive like many other competitors, but there is the option to add third-party widgets using the custom HTML option.
  4. Good range of support channels
Support is offered in forms of community forum, email, Live Chat, knowledgebase, and phone support (available only for Pro plan subscribers). Webs also has two great business-oriented support sites: Marketing Mojo blog and Small Business Resource Center, offering useful information and tips on online marketing, branding advice, website tips and more.

Summary of Cons

  1. Dated, uninspiring template designs
While Webs has an extensive library of mobile-optimized design templates to choose from, some users may find Webs' templates dated and uninspiring and Webs doesn't give you the flexibility to alter the design through the HTML or CSS codes of the template. Template customization is limited to changing the color scheme, background color/image and font styles. Also, their templates are not responsive.
  2. Editor slow response/loading time
The response/loading time for the site builder is slow. There have been user feedbacks about glitches with the site publishing function. However, once published, the website's loading time is back to normal speed.
  3. Bad billing practices
Webs claim a 30-day hassle-free policy on their paid services, but a quick search on the web shows quite a lengthy lists of account billing and cancellation problems experienced by their users. Of course, there are some positive reviews in the mix, too.

Plans & Pricing

Like Weebly and Wix, Webs offer a free plan. The Free plan comes with 100MB bandwidth, 500MB storage space, 25 form submissions and lets you create a website of up to 5 pages. The features that come with this plan is also quite limited. For example, it doesn't come with password protection, mobile site or email services. As with all free plans, you will see Webs' ad on your website, and your web address will be in the form of a sub-domain, such as yourname.webs.com.

If you want more features and/or remove the Webs ad on your website, you will need to upgrade to a premium plan. Webs offer three different premium plans: Starter, Enhanced and Pro.

The Starter plan is perfect for a small business that only needs a basic website. The main benefit of an upgrade from their free plan to the Starter Plan is you get a free domain name, password protect pages, and the removal of the Webs.com ad on your website footer. You also get a mobile version of your website. The plan is offered at $5.99/month, based on a 2-yr billing term. If you do not want to commit to a 2-yr term, there's also a yearly term at $6.99/month or a month-to-month term at $7.99/month. Note that if you opt to go with the month-to-month billing term, you'll also need to pay a $5.00 one-time setup fee. This setup free is waived on the yearly and 2-yr terms.

The Enhanced plan builds upon the Starter plan, with extra features like access to the premium templates and it also opens up live chat as an additional support channel. The plan is offered at $8.99/month, based on a 2-yr billing term. If you do not want to commit to a 2-yr term, there's also a yearly term at $9.99/month or a month-to-month term at $16.99/month. Note that if you opt to go with the month-to-month billing term, you'll also need to pay a $10.00 one-time setup fee. This setup free is waived on the yearly and 2-yr terms.

The Pro plan is the most complete and most powerful of the 3 plans. Not only do you get all the features of the Starter and Enhanced plan, you also get advanced eCommerce capabilities, search engine submission, SEO Booster and phone support. The plan is offered at $11.99/month, based on a 2-yr billing term. If you do not want to commit to a 2-yr term, there's also a yearly term at $14.99/month or a month-to-month term at $34.99/month. Note that if you opt to go with the month-to-month billing term, you'll also need to pay a $15.00 one-time setup fee. This setup free is waived on the yearly and 2-yr terms.

Templates

Webs offers over 400 design templates that span over 20 different industries.

Not all templates are mobile-optimized and customization of mobile websites is only available to Pro plan customers.

Some users may find Webs' templates dated and uninspiring, especially when compared with templates offered by other website builders, such as Wix and Squarespace. And unlike Weebly, Webs doesn't give you the flexibility to alter the design through the HTML or CSS codes of the template. Template customization is limited to changing the color scheme, background color/image and font styles.

Editor

The Webs editor is quite easy-to-use because of its simple interface – it features a dock along the bottom of the page so you can easily find and add elements and modules. Webs uses a drag-and-drop builder and you can easily put together a webpage simply by dragging elements such as pictures and text into place. Because of the simplicity of the interface and builder, the learning curve is not high, compare to website builders like Wix or Squarespace.

Webs drag and drop builder comes with the standard functionalities:
  • 1-click add and edit modules, including text, photos and buttons
  • Redo and undo buttons (up to 5 actions)
  • Column editor
  • Snap to grid (for better precision, especially when lining up modules and columns)
  • Member login sections and Member pages

The Pages function lists all the pages on your site, which you can easily manage, including reordering and creating subpages. When adding a new page, you get a choice of layouts.

Webs also comes with pre-structured app pages. These pages include blogs, online store, photo gallery, guestbooks and calendar. However, because these pages are pre-structured, you won't be able to add elements or modules into these pages.

While Webs lets you easily build a website with many of the standard features of a website builder, it lacks the more modern offerings of Weebly and Wix. For example, Webs doesn't offer multi-language support. You will not be able to create a website with non-Latin based characters, such as Chinese or Arabic.

Blogging

Webs lets you add a blog to your website as an app page.

In terms of blog customization, you won't get as many options as you would with SiteBuilder.com. You can edit the blog description, default view, and comment controls.

Membership site

Webs make it very easy to start your own membership-like website. It even allows you to send bulk emails to your members, and manage how certain groups of members see the website. Simply drag and drop the membership element onto your website and then create password-protected pages that only members can view. From your website, members can signup, edit their profiles, and even invite other users to join your website. You can manage your members and even send email blasts to your members all on your Webs dashboard.

Search Engine Optimization

The Free Webs plan comes with basic SEO functions, such as site titles and descriptions. But if you want to customize individual page titles, descriptions and meta tags, you will need to upgrade to a paid plan.

Webs also offers a site traffic tracking tool that tells you how many visitors you have, number of page views, traffic sources, etc. Webs also supports Google Analytics.

If you are on an account that has a custom domain name, you can also create custom 404 pages.

Webs offers businesses a valuable SEO tool, the SEO Booster, that allows you to customize page titles and descriptions for every page on your website. It also helps you choose the keywords that are the best match for your business and will get your website higher quality traffic. It also helps you monitor your website's SEO score. Webs also offers a new service, Local Listing, that automatically submits your business' information to over 100 local directories online, including Google, Yahoo, Bing, AOL and Yellow Pages. Both the SEO Booster and the Local Listings services are included free-of-charge in the Webs Pro plan, or available separately at a monthly fee to all other plans.

Working with Images

Adding an image and slideshows is easy with their drag-and-drop builder. You can upload your own image, use free stock images or enter the URL to an image on the web. Webs free stock image option takes advantage of Flickr's Creative Commons content.

Webs only offers one photo gallery style – a full-screen viewing on a black background. It lets you adjust the thumbnail view, the spacing around thumbs and whether to display captions.

Unlike many of its competitors, Webs doesn't offer a full image editor. Once the image is uploaded, the only editing options are resizing and panning. The photo gallery application does allow image rotating.

eCommerce

Webs supports the PayPal Buy Now button and PayPal donate button. If you need more selling capabilities, Webs offers an eCommerce application. What you can do with the application depends on what plan you are subscribed to.

For example, on the Free plan, you can list up to 5 items, set product descriptions, prices and tax options. But you do not have any payment processing capabilities. The Enhanced plan lets you list up to 20 store items, up to 3 images per product, inventory tracking and allows you to accept payment through PayPal and Stripe.

To enjoy Webs full ecommerce capabilities, you will need to upgrade to their Pro plan. The Pro plan allows unlimited store items, up to 5 images per product, supports coupon capabilities, custom cart header and comes with Webs SEO Booster service. Unfortunately, even the Pro Plan doesn't give you the ability to sell digital/downloadable goods.

Conclusion

Webs.com is a good site builder for anyone new to making websites and prefers a simple interface and platform – the site builder is very user-friendly. It is also great for people who need to put together a website fast and are not picky on design.

If you are looking for design templates with a more modern touch, or ecommerce solutions with more features and options, Webs.com might not be your best fit. Compared to their competitors, Webs templates are dated and uninspiring and their App Store offers limited tools.

Webs has a 30-day money back guarantee policy, which technically removes the financial risks of trying out their services, but complaints on customer service (especially in the account billing and cancellation department) are common.
